Horthy statue unveiled in the Hungarian Parliament building
A statue depicting Miklós Horthy will be inaugurated in Parliament on Tuesday, the Mi Hazánk Mozgalom said in a statement.
In the statement, the radical party wrote that the statue of the former governor will be inaugurated on the occasion of Homecoming Day (Hazatérés napja) by their parliamentary group in the vice-president’s office of the National Assembly.
There are not many statues of the former governor, one of the most controversial figures in Hungarian history, in Hungary, but there are at least three other statues in public places besides the one in Budapest.
There is a bust of Miklós Horthy in Budapest’s 5th district, at the Church of Homecoming, which belongs to the Reformed Church. That statue was covered in red paint two years ago, but a court did not eventually convict the perpetrator.
A bust has stood in his birthplace, Kenderes, since 1993, and last year a full-length statue of Horthy was unveiled in Hajdúbagos – not without problems, as the night before the unveiling, that statue was also spilled with oil.
